About Furniture

Furniture is the collective term for the movable objects which may support the human body (seating furniture and [bed (furniture)]s), provide storage, or hold objects on horizontal surfaces above the ground. Storage furniture (which often makes use of doors, drawers, and shelves) is used to hold or contain smaller objects such as clothes, tools, books, and household goods. (See [List of furniture types].)

Furniture can be a product of artistic design and is considered a form of [decorative art]. In addition to furniture's functional role, it can serve a symbolic or religious purpose. Domestic furniture works to create, in conjunction with [furnishing]s such as [clock]s and [lighting], comfortable and convenient interior spaces. Furniture can be made from many materials, including metal, plastic, and wood.

[Cabinet making] and cabinet making are terms for the skillset used in the building of furniture.

History Furniture has been a part of the human experience since the development of non-nomadic cultures. Evidence of furniture from [ancient history] survives in the form of [paintings], such as the wall [Mural]s discovered at [Pompeii]; [sculpture], and examples have been excavated in [Egypt] and found in tombs in [Ghiordes], in modern day [Turkey].

Western History The Classical World Early furniture has been excavated from the 8th-century B.C. [Phrygia]n [tumulus], the Midas Mound, in [Gordion], [Turkey]. Pieces found here include [table]s and inlaid serving stands. There are also surviving works from the 9th-8th-century B.C. [Assyria]n palace of [Nimrud]. The earliest surviving carpet, the [Pazyryk] Carpet was discovered in a frozen tomb in [Siberia] and has been dated between the 6th and 3rd century B.C.. Recovered [Ancient Egypt]ian furniture includes a 3rd millennium B.C. [bed (furniture)] discovered in the [Tarkhan Tomb], a c.2550 B.C. [gilded] set from the tomb of [Queen Hetepheres], and a c. 1550 B.C. [stool] from [Thebes (Egypt)]. [Ancient Greek] furniture design beginning in the 2nd millennium B.C., including [bed (furniture)]s and the [klismos chair], is preserved not only by extant works, but by images on [Greek vase]s. The 1738 and 1748 excavations of [Herculaneum] and [Pompeii] introduced Roman furniture, preserved in the ashes of the [79 A.D.] eruption of [Vesuvius], to the eighteenth century.

The Dark Ages The furniture of the [Middle Ages] was usually heavy, [oak], and ornamented with carved designs. Along with the other arts, the Italian [Renaissance] of the fourteenth and fifteenth century marked a rebirth in design, often inspired by the [Greco-Roman] tradition. A similar explosion of design, and renaissance of culture in general, occurred in Northern Europe, starting in the fifteenth century. The seventeenth century, in both Southern and Northern Europe, was characterized by opulent, and often gilded [Baroque] designs that frequently incorporated a profusion of vegetal and scrolling ornament. Starting in the eighteenth century, furniture designs began to develop more rapidly. Although there were some styles that belonged primarily to one nation, such as [Palladianism] in [Great Britain], others, such as the [Rococo] and [Neoclassicism] were perpetuated throughout Western Europe.

The Baroque and Rococo The nineteenth is usually defined by concurrent [revival styles], including [Gothic Revival architecture], Neoclassicism, Rococo and the [Eastlake Movement]. The [design reform] of the late century, introduced the [Aesthetic movement] and the [Arts and Crafts movement]. [Art Nouveau] was influenced by both of these movements.

The first three-quarters of the twentieth century are often seen as the march towards [Modernism]. [Art Deco], [De Stijl], [Bauhaus], [Wiener Werkstätte Style], and [Vienna Secession] designers all worked to some degree within the Modernist idiom. [Postmodernism] design, intersecting the [Pop art] movement, gained steam in the 1960s and 70s, promoted in the 80s by groups such as the Italy-based [Memphis movement.] [Transitional furniture] is intended to fill a place between Traditional and Modern tastes.

Asian History [Asian furniture] has a quite distinct history. The traditions out of [China], [India] and [Japan] are some of the best known, but places such as [Korea], [Mongolia], and the countries of [South East Asia] have unique facets of their own.

Traditional [Japanese furniture] is well known for its [minimalism] style, extensive use of wood, high quality craftsmanship and reliance of wood grain instead of paintings or thick lacquers. Japanese chests are known as [Tansu], and are some of the most sought after of Japanese antiques. The antiques available generally date back to the [Tokugawa era].

[Chinese furniture] is traditionally known better for more ornate pieces. The use of un-carved wood and bamboo and the use of heavy lacquers are well known Chinese styles. It is worth noting that China has an incredibly rich and diverse history, and architecture, religion, furniture and culture in general among many other aspects can vary widely from one dynasty to the next.

Q) does anyone know where i can get a small black computer desk that has tower storage and keyboard storage. if it doesnt have the storage its ok i guess but i kinda want it

A) I just got a cute one at target. http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-11/qid=1185753162/ref=sr_1_11/601-8464894-3600119?ie=UTF8&asin=B000J4JZ80

When furniture is faulty what rights does the buyer have?

Q) I have recently purchased a sideboard. It is covered with oak vaneer. I was attracted to the design because of these natural features. One section of the door vaneer has markings within the wood that do not run with the grain and can not be found anywhere else. Having visited other shops to view furniture from the same range non show similar markings. The shop I purchased from came to look at the problem but did not seem interested and now tell me that I should accept the furniture as it is. I do not feel able to do this, as the defect in the furniture has spoilt its appearance. I would appreciate answers from people who have experienced similar or work in the industry. Is it right to hide an obvious fault behind the 'natural product' excuse?

A) You can do two things: (1) Find out the name of the furniture factory and write them a polite letter, with accompanying photographs of the anomaly you mentioned (cross grained door). Suggest to them that you had received a "defective" product and that with their fine reputation they would not want you to have it. Then ask if they would replace the door or the sideboard and perhaps, or they would merely send you a new door with the grain as it should be you would be glad to have it installed yourself. In our local furniture factory I asked the foreman who told me it would be a simple matter to go out on the assembly floor and pick up a new door. It could be shipped to you (had it been their product) the same day at no charge and with a letter of apology for allowing this to happen, despite their careful quality control. (2) If neither the store nor the factory can be helpful, then you could take careful photos both of your sideboard and a sideboard that does NOT have the defect and write registered letter to the store saying " If you do not wish to replace or repair my defective door I will be taking you to small claims court. Please reply in 10 days or it will be out of my hands" (3) Go to your local small claims court office and register your complaint. It will not cost you much and if you win you will recover those costs as well. Chances are if you present your case in a quiet and courteous manner, presenting your evidence as proof of defect the judge will either award you damages (money in lieu of replacement) or request the store owner to replace the sideboard. You have a legitimate complaint and we wish you luck. Let is know how you make out. "We, in ANSWERS" care about you.

Furniture hire? recommendable furniture hire for short term 6-12 months.,?

Q) moving to a new house need to hire furniture for maximum one year... any recommended companies?

A) Try finding your local Freecycle group; part of Yahoo groups. It's a great place where you get rid of and pick up stuff for free. The objective is to keep stuff out of landfill. The great thing is that when you've finished with it, you can offer your stuff up for others. It's a global thing, so check out the nearest one to you; it's FREE and you'd be doing your bit for the environment..

Furniture for new house? Need some advice? Red Suite?

Q) Im shopping for furniture for my new house and badly need some good ideas. I really love the red suite of furniture but not sure how it would look. 3 Seater and 1 and 1 red leather recliners. Would it be nice with wooden floors red rug cream curtains and cushens? Also is there anywhere on the internet where I can see nicely laid out rooms for ideas. Any ideas? Id be very grateful. Thanks

A) Ikea now have a website you can download a planner and then add furniture details to it( obviously only Ikea stuff but it might help. They do red suites so you can get an idea. the colours you are thinking of sound great, BUT it might be easier to choose neutral colours for the main effect and use bright colours for the accessories as then if you get tired of a red suite it will cost a lot to replace BUT cushions, throws, lampshades rugs etc are cheap in comparison. Even paint is cheaper than a new suite. so it might be better to paint one or more walls red if you like that. best wishes Your budget will also affect what you do. Though I saw that red leather suite in a showroom I thought it was lovely BUT would you grow tired of it after a while.

Hand made or mass produced furniture?

Q) well im thiking of opening up a shop where we would sell hand made, traditional furniture. Do you think there is still demand for traditional hand made furniture thats unique and original, or do people now prefer going to furniture stores and buying the cheaper, mass produced furniture.

A) I definately prefer hand crafted furniture but the price tag is often too steep for me. I guess it depends on your market area and what they can handle.

Q) I remember when I was young-my Dad cleaned a piece of tarnished furniture with traditional furniture polish. But it did not come up very good. So he used a home made concoction that included vinegar..... Does anyone know what this concoction was made from (apart from the vinegar) Thank you

A) I think you will find that it was only vinegar and water. Possibly used a little ammonia with it.

Furniture Restoration?

Q) How do I find business that need furniture to be restored?

A) I am and have been in this business for fourteen years. My business comes from local retailers and trucking companies (I live in NC so there are a lot). But you can also look into the Furniture Restoration Hotline, they have a website that might be helpful to you. Finally, most thrift stores will allow you to place business cards at the register if you smile a lot and be nice to them; it helps them sell product (which is virtually always damaged) and helps you get business.

A) Craigslist.org has a whole section for free stuff. All you have to do is find your city and then search from there. Like another answerer said, sometimes people just want to get rid of their stuff. On a side note, I know you said you're a low-income family, but renter's insurance is actually pretty cheap--like $60 a year. May be worth the investment in case something happens again :) Best of luck to you!
